Frequently asked questions
A sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure that allows doctors to examine the lower part of the colon, including the rectum and sigmoid colon, using a flexible, lighted tube called a sigmoidoscope.
It is used to diagnose the cause of symptoms such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits. It can also detect conditions like polyps, inflammation, diverticulosis, and colorectal cancer in the lower colon.
Most patients feel mild cramping or pressure during the procedure, but it is usually well tolerated. Sedation is not typically required.
