Mirena / Copper T Insertion & Removal

Safe, long-term birth control using intrauterine devices

Frequently asked questions

Both Mirena and Copper T are types of intrauterine devices (IUDs), used for long-term birth control.

  • Mirena is a hormonal IUD that releases progestin and can last up to 7 years.

  • Copper T (ParaGard) is a non-hormonal IUD that uses copper to prevent pregnancy and can last up to 10 years.

Insertion is done in a clinic by a trained healthcare provider. The IUD is placed into the uterus through the cervix using a thin applicator. The procedure takes just a few minutes and may cause brief cramping or discomfort.

Removal is also a quick, in-office procedure. The doctor gently pulls on the strings attached to the IUD, and it slides out through the cervix. Removal is generally painless, though mild cramping may occur.
